In the most basic of explanation, dysregulation of the nervous system occurs when there is an imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system.  For optimal health and wellbeing, our body needs to be able to activate each branch’s functions flexibly and easily throughout the day when responding to life.  However, our body is still running very ancient programming in a modern society.  (Meaning that our nervous system doesn’t know the difference between an actual threat to our life (a lion chasing us) and a psychological threat/stressor (witnessing a devastating situation on the news).
